How to Prevent Wi-Fi “Theft” 1 OF 2

Filed under: Technology — admin @ 2:11 pm

While there are only a few reported cases of Wi-Fi “theft” in the UK, the US, Canada and other countries, it is safe to assume that using other people’s open Wi-Fi networks is a widespread practice. After all, many factors allow the crime to go undetected, unpunished, and therefore undeterred: the reach of open Wi-Fi networks, the anonymity that these networks provide users, and the speed with which this crime can be carried out are just some of these factors.

These are the reasons that cases of Wi-Fi “theft” prove that prevention is better than cure. To prevent Wi-Fi “theft” and the various crimes that arise from it, Wi-Fi users have to learn how to secure their networks. Police officers and technology experts alike have issued proposals as to how to prevent this kind of high-tech theft.

The Dangers of Unsecured Wi-Fi Networks 2 OF 2

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:20 pm

The following are some of the dangers of an unsecured Wi-Fi network:

Getting your account and passwords. Some applications can clearly transmit the text of your account and passwords through the network. A hacker “listening” to your network can easily get your e-mail account information. He or she can open your e-mail account anytime he or she wishes to. And if the hacker is really driven to get information about you, he or she can get more e-mail accounts to target for listening in later.

Capturing your e-mail messages, as well as the websites you visit. Experts say that it is very easy to supervise and capture all e-mail messages, sent or received. After capturing these messages, a hacker can view these later and find the information he or she deems “interesting”. A hacker can also surf with you as the you view various websites in the internet.

Viewing your PC and hard drive. All a hacker needs is for the user to turn file-sharing on and forget to turn it off, or for the user’s personal firewall to be misconfigured or turned off – which happens to people all the time. A hacker can therefore view your personal files and all the information in your PC and hard drive – including how strong your security settings are.

Accessing your corporate network. Is your wireless network connected with a corporate network via a site-to-site virtual private network or VPN? Your open wireless network makes both your network and the corporate network vulnerable to attacks. An improperly configured VPN can also be easily undermined. This brings to mind an incident where hackers accessed millions of customers’ credit cards through the corporate network.

Launching spam and viruses. A hacker can launch spam and viruses through unsecured networks without getting detected. He or she may even use your e-mail to do this, so he or she won’t face the criminal charges that go with the act. A hacker can destroy the network and all PCs on it.

The Dangers of Unsecured Wi-Fi Networks 1 OF 2

Filed under: Technology — admin @ 4:50 pm

Phenomenal” is one word that accurately describes the spread of Wi-Fi networking over the past few years. And as the cost of getting a Wi-Fi connection continues to decrease, “going wireless” is fast becoming part of the vocabulary of more and more people.

The benefits of having a Wi-Fi connection are already known to many. Wi-Fi use, however, brings with it various security risks for the user. Without the proper information and software, users are vulnerable to these dangers.

While someone intercepting your Wi-Fi signal is already a cause for alarm, hackers pose a more significant danger. They can launch either a passive or an active attack without much effort and often without the risk of getting detected.

Passive attacks happen when a hacker intercepts your network traffic without joining your network. The presence of the hacker, therefore, is almost impossible to detect. He or she can just sit back, relax and enjoy while capturing your network traffic – which is almost always heavy – and sift through these later.

On the other hand, active attacks happen when a hacker joins your network. While a hacker in this attack mode can be detected, he or she can launch a more disastrous offensive, targeting the entire network and the devices linked with the network.

SONY Before Blu Ray 2 OF 2

Filed under: Technology — admin @ 12:26 am

No consumer apparently wants to spend a lot and have two formats of the same title when it was quite easy and inexpensive to transcode a DVD file into an mp4 file using shareware and freeware off the net. And for the UMD to compete with its own proprietary memory stick duo that can do the same job however limited, clearly underscores the utter stupidity of the idea.

Up until the mid 90s, Sony didn’t have this much political and technical clout to start another format war so they wisely merged their MMCD with Toshiba’s Superdensity SD to come out with the DVD. And the rest is history. But I am sure Sony is harboring some hurt that they didn’t and are not getting complete licensing profits from DVD had they owned the technology 100%

Now Sony is at it again. This time with more bluster. This time it’s all or nothing. The entire might of the Sony juggernaut is behind this that its failure is unthinkable for them in the light of their declining value in the stock markets. Their survival is now at stake.

The Blu Ray format commands an army of studios and consumer electronic giants to wage another format war with Toshiba’s HD DVD. Sony had earlier teamed with Toshiba in the DVD, now it wants the entire market to itself, the market for high definition - said to be the final frontier for home video.

If any lesson was learned from its past market humiliation in format wars, it’s this: never launch a format war without overwhelming force behind you. Sony has learned that you need software to drive its hardware products.

SONY Before Blu Ray 1 OF 2

Filed under: Technology — admin @ 5:31 pm

Sony seems to be less than what it used to be in the 70s and 80s. Gone are the days when a product like the Sony Trinitron TV commanded technical superiority and upscale market appeal. Every Sony product can now be matched feature for feature, build for build by any of the Japanese electronic giants like Hitachi, JVC, Toshiba, to name some, and from emerging Korean and Chinese brands with better price-performance indices. Its market superiority has given way to market parity in almost every product category, and outright failure in some. What is left of the good old Sony is an overpriced price tag.

It started with the Betamax. For years Sony had wanted to be the unchallenged leader in the video industry, and succeeded well in the professional TV production area where you see u-matic and pro-grade Betamax lording it over for quite a long time. It ALMOST succeeded in the home markets. For a while the word BETAMAX was synonymous to home video the way “Colgate” was to toothpaste. But that didn’t last long. We all know that VHS eventually won the first home video format wars of the late 80s that ended with the last betamax prerecorded tape coming out in 1994.

Admittedly, Sony was and has always been in the fore front of R&D for the home entertainment industry. Its multi-awarded Trinitron and betacam technologies are proof of that. But it seems the need to have proprietary formats never escaped them and could prove their downfall.

After the Betamax, they came out with a string of formats most of which failed miserably in the market. Not only do they have contempt on formats that the public has come to love like the mp3 and the minidisc, but their formats are often priced too high to square with any advantage they have over more OPEN widely acceptable formats.

On other hand, online courses have been gaining popularity among students. It is convenient, easy and at the same time efficient. Thanks to broadband connection learning online is way closer and simpler. This is a great advantage especially for those students who dream of further knowledge and updates by only using their computers.
Broadband technologies include Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), Wireless, Satellite, Fiber, Cable Modem, and Broadband over Powerline (BPL). All these offer high-speed transmission which the people can avail and enjoy. But each technology has its own requirements. In addition, the users must consider several factors such as the location or the area, price, compatibility with the existing hardware unit, availability and many more. Thus, the users must decide wisely on what to choose to ensure a high quality internet services.
A person of today requires the constant use of computers in order to earn a living. Everybody needs internet access - from education, medicine, business, entertainment and even politics. Faster Connection with Broadband Internet 1 OF 2

Filed under: Technology — admin @ 1:08 pm

In this modern time where you seem to be on the rush on everything and that everything has a lot to do with the use of internet, the very last thing you would want is a slow internet connection. With the use of internet, you can connect with different people, search for any information, buy anything you need and so forth. For the longest time, dial-up internet access has been used chiefly by home users. It was the widely and commonly used form of internet connection since 1990s when internet was first introduced and boomed. It may be cheap but its main drawback is its slow internet speed.

But technology never ceases to improve and innovate; many users are shifting from the traditional dial up internet access to a much higher speed brought by broadband internet. In its simplest sense, broadband internet access refers to a higher-speed internet connection. This is a type of data transmission technique wherein the transmission speed goes beyond 256 kilobits per second (Kbps) in one direction.

The use of broadband internet permits the users to access the different internet-related services at extensively higher and faster speed compared to dial-up internet connection. This perfectly fits especially now where time is very essential. You cannot waste a fraction of a second just to wait for your last file download. With the advent of broadband internet connection, work, business, research, entertainment, games and a lot more have been easier, quicker and more convenient for the users.

Moreover, there are other services that can only be enjoyed with the use of broadband internet that the dial-up connection can not offer due to speed limitations. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), for example, is one service that is much cheaper than traditional voice telephone service. It can only be made possible with the connection of broadband internet. VoIP services can only permit users using the same service but there are others which can allow landline telephone users a connection to different parts of the world.

The Various Broadband Systems Available 2 OF 2

Filed under: Technology — admin @ 1:57 pm

It is said to be comparable to a DSL broadband internet. But there are drawbacks in using this type of broadband. It is only useful if the area is served with a cable provider. If there is no cable line within that location then it’s impossible to obtain such internet connection. Moreover, the speed diminishes as more neighbors share the connection.

Wireless
Wireless broadband, most commonly known as “Wi-Fi”, simply refers to broadband connection without wires. Web browsing is made possible via a wireless technology. This Wi-Fi is usually found in many areas within the cities so-called as “hot spots”. Wireless broadband transmits data via radio waves to the areas surrounding it. A computer with wireless capacity can detect the signal, thus making it connected to the internet.

Satellite
Satellite can also provide wireless broadband. Its mechanism is similar to the satellites used for television and telephone. It is very useful especially in remote and rural locations. Though giving a reliable and faster internet connection, it may be a little costly than DSL or cable modem.

These are some of the most widely used broadband internet technologies. All of them provide a very good internet service. Just remember to choose the broadband internet system that can best suite your computer. The broadband internet technology indeed has a great contribution to the people, nation and the world itself.

The Various Broadband Systems Available 1 OF 2

Filed under: Technology — admin @ 11:43 am

The broadband internet connection is without a doubt an instant hit among all internet users. Its use is phenomenal as it offers a lot more services compared to the traditional dial up internet connection. Moreover, one very good thing about broadband internet technology is its speed. It is undeniably way faster and quicker than dial up connection. It allows a more smooth, unlimited, non-stop and uninterrupted web surfing, viewing, calling, downloading, chatting and many more internet-related services.

There are various broadband internet systems/technologies available to use. However, there are various factors that are needed to be considered before choosing one. Such considerations are budget, speed requirement, area or location, compatibility with the unit and many more. One might be confused of which to select. Below are the different broadband internet access technologies.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a broadband technology that utilizes the same wires as with regular telephone line. It offers a very high speed data transmission than a regular modem that ranges from a hundred kilobits per second (Kbps) to millions of bits per second (Mbps). Aside from that, there is a non-stop connection. When using the internet, one does not need to dial up. In addition, the telephone can be used while browsing or using the internet.

Cable Modem
A high speed broadband internet connection can now be enjoyed from their local cable operator/provider. This modem enables the PC to transmit and receive data at about 1.5 Mbps just by hooking the computer up to a cable TV line. This is way faster than telephone modems in dial-up (28.8-56 Kbps) or of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN 128 Kbps).
